What is a Shelly Bypass Used For And Why Do I Need One
With the recent introduction of the Shelly 1L to the Shelly Home Automation range you may have noticed an add-on that is available specifically with the Shelly 1L called a Shelly Bypass. We sell the Shelly Bypass in the store as a standalone product or as an add-on with any Shelly 1L or Shelly Dimmer 2 devices but what actually are they and do you need one
The great thing with both the Shelly 1Land Shelly Dimmer 2 is they work without the need of a neutral line. That’s great news for us here in Australia if you are wanting to add a Shelly device behind a light switch where typically we do not have a neutral wire.
What is a Shelly Bypass
A Shelly Bypass is required where there is neutral wire and where the power consumption is less than 20 watts. If the load of the light is very low typically LED lights you need to add some form of load thats where the need of a bypass comes in
Rather than turning off the light the Shelly 1Land Shelly Dimmer 2 dim the light so low it stops glowing leaving a very small current flowing through the circuit of the Shelly Device to keep it running even when the light is off.
Do I need a Shelly Bypass
Most LED lightbulbs in Australia are under 20 watts. The Shelly 1L or Dimmer 2 require a minimum load to be able to power the module so if you are below this value then you will need one.
If you are using the Shelly 1Lor the Shelly Dimmer 2 in a place with no neutral wire such as behind a light switch and you live in Australia yes you most likely do.
Where do I install the Shelly Bypass
If you are installing a Shelly Bypass in a lighting circuit in Australia you will need to attach the Shelly Bypass between the Output wire going to the lightbulb and the neutral going to the other side of the lightbulb. It will feel very unnatural to connect the wire this way. Most people in Australia have a ceiling rose or light fitting which allows the space for a Shelly Bypass. They are really small being only 39 mm x 23 mm x 7 mm.
Do I need a Shelly Bypass if I have a Neutral Wire
No you only need a Shelly Bypass where there is no Neutral wire.
What about Dimmable Loads do I need one to stop lights flickering
Yes if you are using Dimmable LEDs with less than 50 Watts total load they may be subject to flickering especially when dimmed down low. The bypass will stop this flickering.
If you have a Neutral wire you may wish to consider either the Shelly 1 or the Shelly 1PM unless you need the di
Stop dimmed lights flickering.
Dimming energy-saving lights is complicated ? there?s a lot of different technologies built into modern bulbs.
That?s why dimmed lights sometimes flicker or remain on ? power trickles through.?The?AEOTEC Dimmer Bypass?works with the?AEOTEC Nano Dimmer?to remove the signals from your power line that cause low-watt lightbulbs to flicker.
If you want to control low-voltage lighting that?uses less than 4 Watts?using an?AEOTEC Nano Dimmer?you will need to include the?AEOTEC Dimmer Bypass?in your installation to ensure the lights do not flicker.
The AEOTEC Nano Dimmer InWall dramatically improves the lighting in your home. Aeotec 3rd generation of invisible lighting controllers outperforms all that has come before it. Dimming is smoother. Compatibility is broader. Lighting is faster and more responsive. Automation and intelligence have never been more powerful. And it comes in such a small size, that you?ll be amazed at just how much functionality we were able to craft inside.
Perfect lighting is a part of every truly smart home. Lighting that is responsive. That is always the right brightness. That is always on when you need it, and off when you don?t. But perfect lighting has never been easy.
Instead, perfect lighting has been too complicated to achieve. In the past, to automate your lights with Z-Wave you?ve had to worry about the type of wiring you have, whether your lighting is trailing or leading edge, and whether you?re using TRIACs or thyristors. Far too complicated. Get any of those wrong and your connected lighting would quickly become a connected headache.
No more. Nano Dimmer offers smart, connected lighting without any of the hassles.

There are a lot of different types of low-power light bulbs that your home may have; Bypass has been designed to work with most of them. It?s been designed to stop most bulbs from flickering including?static and dimmable LEDs and CFLs.
Nano Dimmer lets you add new and existing lights to your Z-Wave system. It makes your lights smarter. It makes them responsive. It gives you the ability to control them, schedule, dim them and brighten them.
All that control and intelligence comes from simply wiring Nano Dimmer behind an existing wall switch.
PLEASE NOTE FOR THE INSTALLATIONS IN THE AREAS WHERE ELECTRICITY SUPPLIERS USE OFF-PEAK RIPPLE CONTROL SIGNALS:
Electricity suppliers in particular areas of Australia such as NSW, QLD and some other places are injecting an off-peak ripple control signal using Zellweger equipment?or similar onto their distribution networks in order to remotely control devices such as off-peak hot water systems and street lighting, although other areas within Australia also use this technology. Not all properties are affected by ripple control, so just because you might live in one of these areas, does not mean that you will have these problems.
Ripple injection control systems work by superimposing coded control signals, commonly 750Hz or 1050Hz on the 50 Hz mains supply.
Some electrical appliances such as fans, dimmers, toasters and LED lighting can be sensitive to this ripple control signal. The results could be audible buzzing noises from fans or flickering lights whenever the ripple control signals are present.
Electricity suppliers are advising users to install appropriate?ripple signal filters in such areas.
The ripple signal filter is a tuned passive inline filter that completely eliminates the superimposed ripple injection control signal from the normal mains supply to produce a noise-free filtered mains supply which can then be connected to the electrical appliances or light control systems. The ripple signal filter is specifically tuned to eliminate the ripple control signal frequency of 750Hz or 1050Hz.
However, we can?t guarantee the ripple signal filter always will help you if you experiencing such issues. Please contact your local energy provider to get more information and proposed solutions for your electrical installation.
If you are getting similar problems with your dimmers and fans and it?s not Ripple Control Signal and you are hearing the tones at random times of the day, your electrical supply may be affected by harmonics; a power fluctuation that is not part of the normal electricity supply or ripple control signal output.
Harmonics are caused by interference created by other equipment on the network, such as inverter type air conditioners and switch-mode power supplies for computers.
The offending appliances may be in your home or other premises on the local power grid. If you are being affected by network harmonics, it may be of benefit to transfer the electricity supply to your premises to a different phase in the street. This is something you will need to discuss with your electrical company.
We are strongly recommending for the areas we have mentioned above to run tests with only a few dimmers before committing for high volumes. If results are not fully OK you may use relays only instead of dimmers. Please note that our warranty for the faulty devices is not covering above-mentioned conditions with your local electric grids.
Please see affected with Ripple Signalling areas here:
